The road less travelled

چکیده

In the ever more competitive arena of biological research, there is a widespread perception that, if you haven’t got a firm foothold on the ladder by your late twenties, you’ll never make it. It’s tempting to believe this. Indeed, working at Cold Spring Harbor’s Watson School of Biological Sciences brings me into daily contact with biologists of all ages and stages, who are nothing if not highly motivated and focused. But there’s more than one way to skin a cat. My own route from the Gorbals in Glasgow, where I was born, to Long Island was circuitous, to say the least. I left school at the age of 16 and, with a handful of ‘O-level’ qualifications, it seemed like the world was at my feet — the world of banking, that is. A nine-to-five job for life, low interest rate loans and free banking — what more could anyone want? “If I don’t like it after the first year, I’ll go back to school then go to University,” I promised myself. Eight years later, almost dead from boredom, I finally went to Glasgow University to study molecular biology. That was an extremely difficult transition; the gaps in my knowledge seemed insurmountable at times, and constantly being referred to as a ‘mature’ student made me feel that my free bus pass wasn’t far off. But despite this, I was hooked. I developed an interest in research while working in the lab during the summer break, and a PhD seemed the logical next step. And so started one of the best times in my life. Under the guidance of Ron Hay at St Andrews University, I came to realize just how exciting research could be. I loved the uncertainty, the competitiveness, learning how to think about science and, above all, doing experiments. What I didn’t realize at that time was how different research could be outside the context of my PhD. My next move was fairly standard — postdoctoral research in the US. This transition was also hard. In part, the problem was cultural, even ordering a sandwich in New York City introduced me to a new language, but also competition was more intense in the lab and the atmosphere less collegiate.

The road less travelled: moving from distribution to determinants in the study of gambling epidemiology.

This article reviews the current status of gambling epidemiology studies and suggests that it is time to move from general population-prevalence research toward the investigation of risk and protective factors that influence the onset of gambling disorders. The study of incidence among vulnerable and resilient populations is a road yet to be taken. In this review, we briefly introduce the histo...

On-road obstacle detection system for driver assistance

Obstacle detection is an active research area in the field of image processing. On road obstacle detection is an important problem in the area of intelligent transportation systems, driver assistance systems and automated guided vehicles. The proposed algorithm detects all obstacles on road using a single onboard camera which is mounted on a travelled vehicle in real-time for driver assistance....

Factors associated with the occurrence of injuries requiring hospital transfer among older and working-age pedestrians in Kurume, Japan

BACKGROUND Pedestrian injuries among older people tend to occur near their residence. However, knowledge regarding whether distance travelled from home to the injury site or road environmental/socioeconomic factors affect injury severity remains limited. METHODS A cross-sectional study was performed using injury registry data from the Kurume City Fire Department, Japan. Distance travelled fro...

A road less travelled by. A review lecture given to the Royal Irish Academy on the occasion of the Award of Merit and Silver Medal by the Consultative Committee for Pharmacology & Toxicology on 22 November 2001.

A ROAD LESS TRAVELLED BY "Two roads diverged in a wood, and I took the one less travelled by, And that has made all the difference." Robert Frost (1874-1963) In his book "Genome" Matt Ridley has said "scientists are not interested in knowledge-only ignorance and mysteries ". My review will therefore be unlikely to inform but rather to bewilder! My title is taken from Robert Frost's famous poem ...

Road crash involvement and professional status: a prospective study using the French Gazel cohort.

OBJECTIVES To assess professional status (PS) differences in the risk of road crash involvement (RCI) (irrespective of crash severity), and to examine the underlying mechanism by evaluating the role of exposure to road risk (ERR). METHOD A total of 15,271 subjects selected from the French GAZEL cohort were studied. A proportional hazard model for recurrent events was used to calculate the rel...
